Deck Name: Compendium of Constellations
Creator(s): Claire Goodchild
Publisher & Year: Black and the Moon, 2017
The cosmos have always been a fascination of mine and I grew up with a Dad who was equally passionate about planets, shuttle launches and space walks. When I started to learn about astrology last year, I fell hard in love with constellations and stars, it was the mythology surrounding each one that really drew me in. The Compendium of Constellations is an oracle deck created by Claire Goodchild that really hits home for me and aligns up perfectly with my constellation enchantment. It summons all the the feelings I have that are both nostalgic and new!
The Compendium of Constellations is a Black and the Moon deck by Claire Goodchild. Her decks each have such good energy and are stunningly beautiful to look at and use. The deck consists of 90-cards and I love that she made it such a meaty little deck. When I come across a deck that I love, I always want more and this deck delivers just that!
The cards are poker size and measure roughly at: 2.5” x 3.5”
It’s really hard to pick my favorites in this deck, I really love them all and they all carry a unique message. I decided to go with keywords and my favorite constellations.
LEPUS // (ambition) We all need some ambition from time to time, I know I need it a lot lately. The Lepus constellation is my absolute favorite, I fell in love with some of the stories surrounding this constellation when I first read about them. The main myth depicts Lepus as a hare being chased by Orion or hunted by his dogs. The hare for sure needed big ambition to get past the dogs!
ANTLIA // (enhance) When I look at this card, I’m reminded to bring out the beauty and what makes something unique to the surface. The Antlia constellation is part of the Lacaille constellation family and the name translates to simply “pump or air pump” in ancient Greek.
URSA MINOR // (learn) Between Ursa Minor and Ursa Major, I love the keyword associated with this card, learn. I’m like a sponge and I’m always trying to learn something new, this card resonates well for me! Ursa Minor means “lesser bear” in Latin and known as the Little Dipper due to its pan handle end.
CARD STOCK + SHUFFLING
The Compendium of Constellations has fantastic, smooth cardstock. This makes shuffling effortlessly and addicting, I love shuffling this deck! Despite having 90 cards, I can still riffle shuffle this deck fairly well, which pleases my hands immensely! I always got to get at least a few riffle shuffles in there to make me happy. The cardstock has a soft and sleek feel but it’s shiny, I really love the feel of Claire’s decks!
I’m a big fan of minimal design and while each card has its own round framed in constellation, the cards are very clean and distraction free. You can tell a lot of detail and attention went into creating this deck. Being a big typography nerd, I find the font to be a perfect choice for these cards and the aged look of the background blends beautifully with the titles. The cards have an antique feel to them, they look as if they have sat on Galileo’s desk at some point. I like to think they did, just for fun!
Each constellation looks like watercolor and the colors vary from card to card. Some feature just one color hue, while others contain two or three hues that blend together in all the right ways. The colors pop when in a spread!
GUIDEBOOK + PACKAGING
This oracle deck does not come with a guidebook or guide, but really, you don’t need one at all. Each card has a keyword with the constellation name right on front so they are pretty explanatory and I love the freedom you get when interpreting the card. The keywords are so clear that this deck pairs up magically with tarot so well!
The deck comes in a matching tuck box that fits the deck just perfect, it’s fairly sturdy as far as tuck boxes go I think!
The Compendium of Constellations is slowly becoming one of my favorite oracle decks right now, I just love the design and love that it comes with so many cards! I’ve been having a great time pairing this oracle up with my favorite tarot decks. If you have been on the fence with this deck, just order it already! I promise you won’t regret it!
