Rita Santana is an artist, tattoo artist, and creator of the Illustrated Alchemist's Tarot. The Illustrated Alchemist's Tarot is a deck full of provocative imagery based on RWS with a bit of Marseille sprinkled in. Altogether, it makes for a unique deck.

The images are bright and bold and feel electric. Although the subjects of some card can be a bit abstract, the images tell a clear narrative. This deck feels like it could serve as the set for a 80's/90's metal rock music video.

Admittedly, this isn't my aesthetic but I can still appreciate certain aspects of this deck. I found the character continuity in certain cards intriguing. The Fool, the protagonist in the fool's journey, is confronted by Death as Death makes it clear that the Fool cannot control time.

The depiction of the lovers, heart and mind alike, are portrayed as the nervous system and cardiovascular system. This peaked the interest of the medical anatomy nerd in me. This couple is present in the Devil card as well as the Tower. Seeing heart and mind separated in these cards made me consider how we can compartmentalize our experiences and although our whole being may experience something, our heart and mind can understand it differently.

The Illustrated Alchemist's Tarot arrives in a tuck box along with a drawstring bag. It is a 79-card deck, with a bonus card called The Void. There is no guidebook so I wouldn't suggest this deck for a beginner. Someone familiar with RWS and/or Marseille symbolism would benefit the most from this offering to the world of Tarot.

I was first drawn to the Lifeline Lenoracle because of its beautiful and unique art. The images are classic illustrations by Walter Crane reimagined as a single hand-drawn line. This gives the deck both a modern and timeless character.

The moment I started working with these cards, however, I knew this was more than just a pretty deck! Its unique composition really enhances the reading experience.

To begin with, this is a 58 card deck, comprising of the standard 52 playing cards, 2 jokers and 2 additional Ace of Hearts (male significator) and Ace of Spades (female significator). While the 6s - Aces carry the traditional Lenormand imageries, the 2s - 5s presents additional symbols that can be used as an oracle deck or for expanded Lenormand readings. Just like the original Lenormand objects, these new images are simple and intuitive.

Another aspect that is special to this deck is its choice of the numbering systems. Other Lenormand decks focus on the 36 numbers, with many foregoing the card pips altogether. This deck places the playing card structure front and center and, instead, leaves out the Lenormand numbering system.

This change, while seemingly simple, made a very big difference in the way I read Lenormand. Although I was aware that the pips give additional meaning to the cards, I never utilized them before. Being able to see the pips so clearly in this deck, however, makes it easy to incorporate them into readings. For the first time, I can easily factor in the pips and place focus on recurring suits.

What is most impressive is that the themes in each suit are extended to the oracle portion of this deck. This gives the entire deck one very cohesive feel and I feel equally comfortable reading with this 52 card deck as I do with the traditional 36 cards.

This truly is one of the most refreshingly original deck I’ve worked with in a long time!

Spiral Oracle is made up of original art by Lili Acuña, and artist who originates from Chile. Her images are striking with a soft, gentle energy. This oracle is composed of 62 images that invites you to discover the power of your full potential.

The large format cards give readers the ability to appreciate the fine detail and skill used to create each piece. Lili says in the guidebook how the artwork is a reflection of a personal journey of growth and learning.

For Lili this process was intuitive therefore, Lili highlights the importance of and intuitive connection as well as the skill of tapping into your subconscious while using the oracle.

The cards cover a wide range of subjects including nature themes, personal development, and universal truths. The guidebook combines poetry, affirmations, quotes, and advice. It is written from a first person perspective which strengthens the reader's intuitive connection to this deck.

Although the artwork for the images in this deck was preexisting, they are cohesive and they flow quite naturally. The cardstock for this deck is thick yet flexible and though the cards are large, I was able to shuffle them with my smaller hands.

I’ve been spending the last week or so reading with the Northern Animal Tarot by Linda of Wilder Hearts Studio.

I love the mechanics of this deck:
-made local to the creator
-sustainable sourced paper
-delicious tuckbox, hand stamped stars
-the way this darling shuffles, omg
-21 extra cards
-features non-migratory animals found in the Northern America
-gorgeous color palette

I love the way it brings the magic of anthropomorphic animals to my hands. I know that for me I’m reminded of the characters I loved as a kid (Mrs. Frisby, TMNT, Pink Panther, etc) and that it’s easy to find their voices in these cards. Nostalgia definitely plays a role in this deck.

But, more than that, what comes from these images is the reminder of our connectedness to nature. They way we find messages in the world around us. Decks that bring the outside in hold such a meaningful place in my collection. I want to dive into them and learn.

There is such attention to details of the RWS deck that it’s super easy to learn on these cards if you’re new, and there’s so much depth that even the more experienced reader can find new things. I love a deck that challenges me, and adds to my stored knowledge.

I adore the bonus cards, especially having a few spread cards that I can keep with the deck. The moon cards are a delight. I have found that I love having them in the deck, their meanings adding depth I didn’t know I wanted to my readings.

Krista Flute is a story-teller and artist who has used her creative talents and personal experiences to create a tarot deck and accompanying oracle deck called the #LandBack Tarot and Oracle of Colonization. Krista, auntykstarot, has deconstructed the traditional RWS and decolonized it. She's recreated using her experiences as an Indigenous woman as inspiration for the RWS archetypes.

As a result, many cards will be unrecognizable to traditional users of the RWS but the 168 page guidebook makes a point to carefully and patiently explain the meanings and messages for each card. I was happy to see many cards I personally struggle with renamed. An example would be the Hierophant being changed to Charlatan. From the perspective of an Indigenous woman, religious icons and figures are not comfortable symbols of guidance. They represent the Christian based institutions that forced assimilation onto the indigenous people across the Americas. People who adopt those values and principles often sellout fellow indigenous people, like the Pipeline Perry, the Charlatan pictured on card number 5. This is just one example of the vision Krista used to create this very important deck that highlights the realities of colonized people across the world.

The Oracle of Colonization was created along with the tarot in sequence after the Major Arcana. Krista describes the oracle as a Shadow Arcana. This is a concept I appreciate as many of the subjects in the oracle are issues people choose to acknowledge through shadow work, or ignore through spiritual bypassing. Either way, the oracle and tarot deck ho hand and hand but can be used together or separately.

#LandbackTarot and Oracle of Colonization are currently funding on Kickstarter until 5/31/21. If you are serious about doing the work to dismantle systemic racism then, this deck is one you must own. The Simplicity Tarot: Red Rose Diverse Edition was

The Simplicity Tarot: Red Rose Diverse Edition was created by Emilie Muniz, a reader, teacher, and card creator. This is the 3rd edition of this deck and it is beautifully diverse in its representation of skin colors and sizes. When there are cards with multiple people on it, there is almost always a variation of skin color.

When it comes to the cards themselves, I am going to absolutely fan girl about 2 things: the edges and the backs. The edges! I hope you can see the gorgeousness that is the metallic red gilt edges with stars. I gasped when I saw it. While I don’t read reversals, I love a gorgeous reversible back and these are embellished without being overwhelming in their detail. That last statement could apply to much of this deck.

This deck is a great beginner deck as there are keyword printed on the bottom of each card. Emilie’s knowledge of tarot really shines here with the use of 2 keywords and the simplified card images, hence it’s name. The images are easily recognized as a Rider-Waite-Smith variant but it’s focus is on the central figure with light detailing of the backgrounds. As an experienced reader, I didn’t find the keywords distracting or miss the details removed from the cards. The included little white book includes several sentences on each card with additional keywords for upright and reversed meanings.
