Indie Deck Review
When I volunteered to review the Santos & Signs or When I volunteered to review the Santos & Signs oracle by Mellissae Lucia I knew it would be a personal challenge. My brief understanding of the oracle was that it is based on Catholic iconography. I don't like to do much research on a deck before I review it because I want my first impressions to be genuine. Mellissae goes into great detail about the oracle on the Esty.

Once I open the deck I was further intimidated by the fact that this oracle was meant to be used with one's intuition. My experience and understanding of Catholic images are severely limited and I was hoping there might be some literature about the images that I could use as a baseline for divination. Even with these obstacles, I found myself working with the deck with a level of intimacy that was shocking. It reached right in to help me address my fears and anxiety.

This oracle is composed of 3 decks; The Santos deck of Catholic iconography from cemeteries and roadside altars, The Graffiti deck which is composed of roadside advertising and signage along Route 66, and finally the single word devotional concepts, 136 cards in total. The pocket-sized decks come in a cotton drawstring bag with a piece of rose quartz, soil from New Mexico, and a medallion.

The readings I experienced with this deck were reassuring and gentle and full of maternal energy. My fears and doubts were swiftly put to rest with messages telling me to trust, receive, have faith, enjoy the process and commit regardless of my apprehension.

The image of Guadalupe makes several appearances in this set which seems fitting considering the maternal energy I felt while using this deck. If you're interested in getting a copy visit Mellissae's IG account or her Etsy Shop, MellissaeLuciaArt.

Stay tuned to Indiedeckreview.com for an extended review of Santos & Signs Oracle.

When I first found out about the Mermaid Type Taro When I first found out about the Mermaid Type Tarot, I was very intrigued by the concept of using intertwining mermaids to create letters. So when I had the opportunity to review the party edition, I jumped at the chance.

This edition is a mixture of the original flexible mermaids along with photos of sculptures and paintings. In addition to both upper and lower case letters, the mermaids comes together to create numbers and punctuations as well.

My first impression is that it feels a little random, kind of like it’s drunk (but I guess that’s why it’s called the party edition!). The photography feels like those experimental films in the 70s that follow no structure but leaves the audience with varying emotions that are hard to define.

As there are no traditional tarot imageries, not even the most basic pip card structure, my first task was to decide how I was going to read with it.

I have found that this deck relies on intuition like no other decks I’ve ever worked with. Even decks with abstract images or unknown symbols become familiar after some use. The Mermaid Type Tarot, however, have no boundaries and is as fluid as the ocean waters in which these creatures swim. My interpretation varies with each reading.

I utilize everything I’ve learnt from tarot, oracle and Lenormand. Most often, I’ll begin my interpretation using traditional tarot meanings. Depending on the cards, I’ll also rely heavily on my intuition, which feels like working with an oracle deck without keywords or guide. Some of the letter cards also read like Lenormand in that I’ll try to come up with words of that letter that are associated with the tarot interpretation and then string these words together into sentences.

While it was a bit of a challenge to get used to, it was always fun and never frustrating. It almost feels like a game in how rewarding it feels once you decipher the messages. It really is an anything goes party style way of reading!

I’ve been working with the Deconstructed & Disti I’ve been working with the Deconstructed & Distilled deck for several weeks now, and I’ve developed quite a relationship with it.
First, let’s discuss the hexagon shape. Beehive stuff all day long, so already I know it’s about the work. But, the way this shape allows the cards to slide into and fit around other cards in a layered reading is a huge bonus.

Second, the language. The meanings of the major arcana have been distilled down to the base. They are single seeds waiting to be shown the direction in which they’ll grow best for you.

Third, the book is a living thing. There is a link to it in Trudi’s bio and I advise you to go check it out.

The first time I used this deck I was adding it to my Witch’s Wheel readings. I had a few late in the year requests and this deck arrived in time to do my own reading. I already read in a way that incorporates the landscape of the cards, and adding the hive structure to it gave me almost a 3-D effect.

The deck has evolved since I got my copy, and now there are charms that go with it. There are four sets: Body, Emotions, Nature and Symbols.

I love the way Trudi’s mind works and am super excited to explore this system of hers.

RWR- This deck does not feature humans

I am so enchanted with the Reverie Tarot. It is de I am so enchanted with the Reverie Tarot. It is deceptively simple, and delightfully full of wonder. It plays with numbers, letters and symbols, creating worlds within to explore.

And, the images themselves, the stories they tell? They’re a little bit left of standard. I love with my whole heart when decks take me out of the traditional meanings, even if it’s just to shift our focus a little bit.

I found myself using the shape of the image as part of the reading. Like, the roundness of the pentacles informed the way I read them. Example: The roundness of the 7/P brought to my attention the cyclical nature of that card, the nature of planting/growing/harvesting, of making mistakes and doing better the next time.

The shape of the sword in the 7/S brought to mind the sharpness of a truth not spoken, of the pointedness of secrets kept and how you must always have your hand on a lie to make sure it stays pointed away from you.

The Ace/P leans on the slimness of the letter, reminding me of the bones that hold us up so that we can build. The foundation of our own fullness,, our own ripeness, our own openness to grow.

Look at the way the courts are shaped. How the Queen/W stands in the fullness, but moves toward the empty space. She grows that way. The Page/S is in the tall and straight part of their letter, grows from what they know. The Knight/C is everywhere and knows no boundary. The King/P is spreading out into the edges, vining his way into the parts that we thought were full already.
It’s a fascinating deck.

Constance has the the 2nd edition ready for preorder right now.

Posted @withregram • @saltandshadowtarot Izzy ha Posted @withregram • @saltandshadowtarot Izzy has been such an amazing human to work with. When she reached out to me and sent me the info about her deck, The Guide was the first card I looked at. I stopped right there because I knew I’d want to help this project get the recognition and attempt deserved.

The Heroine’s Journey oracle takes all of us on a journey through own own survival, and makes room for our own humanity to take center stage.
I cannot wait to support Izzy and @heroinesjourneyoracle on Tuesday when her Kickstarter goes live.
The word Interim, according to the Interim Tarot’s guidebook, means an intervening time; provisional or temporary. In other words, it’s that space and time in between.

I wouldn’t have thought of that description on my own, but that’s a perfect way to define this deck. It sits on the edge of so many different themes but doesn’t fit nicely into any category. There are cute cards, but it's not a cute deck. There are also weird things happening, but it's not a weird deck either. Sometimes it makes me feel like I’m out of my elements but it always still feels like home. It’s not our reality, but it’s definitely more than a dream.

The artwork further carries out this theme of existing in between solidly defined concepts. Adopting a monochrome colour scheme gives it a simple appearance. At the same time, the busy line work gives it a sense of complexity.

The little guidebook that fits inside its two piece box is a giant of a resource. Normally, guidebooks that size can capture only the most basic information. The card explanations in this book, however, are thoughtful and eloquent. Combined with the beautiful cards, this is one of those decks that really help me expand my interpretation comfort zone.

I find the Interim Tarot highly intriguing because it’s not just another RWS derivative. Many cards carry a slightly different twist than what I'm used to. There are so many interrelated concepts embedded into each tarot card that it’s impossible to capture them all. Like a Bosch painting, there are simply too many different points of focus. I don’t know where each card begins or ends but if the standard RWS interpretations represents somewhere in the middle of the painting, the Interim Tarot is probably somewhere just left of center, between two focal points.

This beautiful deck will soon have a second edition that will be borderless. The Kickstarter campaign is already fully funded but you can still grab a copy at:

Strength

Tarot Number: 11

Zodiac Sign: Leo

In Tarot, the Strength card symbolizes determination in the face of adversity, and power in the guise of gentle persuasion. The woman in the artwork has tamed a lion, not through force or fanfare, but with a quiet faith in her own ability to succeed. She is the embodied power behind the throne, holding all things in balance with her immeasurable patience and inner calm. Over her head is the symbol of infinity, signifying her endless capacity to endure, and to overcome any obstacle with skill and subtlety.

Upright: Confidence, inner-focus, compassion.

Reversed: Cowardice, weakness, self-doubt.
